You spoke, we listened – welcome to the new New Civil Engineer

You spoke, we listened. This week marks the beginning of a bold new era for New Civil Engineer. And we’re very excited about it.

New Civil Engineer was launched in May 1972 in response to an industry need – a need for an independent, authoritative voice for civil engineers. And it landed with impact.

Our first editor Sydney Lensson summed it up perfectly when he said that by “ventilating the issues of the day we hope that everybody might be better informed – and more able to respond in a more co-ordinated way – to a fast changing industry and world.”

We believe that holds true today. And so, more importantly, do you, our readers.

But the way the media is used and consumed has changed and we have not properly adapted to that. And that has limited our ability to land with that same impact today. We know that.

So this summer we asked you what you wanted from New Civil Engineer. More than 1,000 of you helped. Thank you. And since then we have been working closely with the ICE to re-engineer our offering to help you get the information you need, when you need it, and in an format that better suits today’s engineers

Our new products firmly address the areas that matter most to ICE members; global insight, technical knowledge, and inspiration around technology.

New Civil Engineer will deliver faster, more frequent news and news analysis through a much enhanced digital service as well as a bigger, better, bolder monthly edition exploring the issues that matter most to you.

Every issue will have a global project report. Every issue will have a technical feature. Every issue will have an interview with a technology pioneer. And every issue will have an interview with an inspirational role model.

And every issue begins with some robust comment and analysis including an ICE thought-piece right at the start.

That is our promise to you. And this week marks the start. Our beautiful new website newcivilengineer.com is now live. Here you can sign up to our beautiful new daily newsletter. From January you can also sign up for a receive our weekly wrap – a summary of the week’s news with analysis and opinion.

And then, on or around 20 January – and wherever you are in the world – you’ll receive our new, beautiful, analytical, technical, global magazine – in print or in app.

You can read about our plans in detail at newcivilengineer.com/re-engineered.

We are hugely excited. And totally committed.

In 1972 the ICE created New Civil Engineer to be an independent voice for the professional civil engineer with a clear remit to challenge and inform; to get under the skin of the industry and give professionals intelligence they cannot find elsewhere.

We will recapture that sense of purpose and deliver that intelligence in a format and frequency that fulfils the need of today’s civil engineers.

That is our mission. Our mission to re-engineer New Civil Engineer. I hope you like it.
