NCE Graduate Award winners last week challenged engineering firms to donate cash to development charity Engineers Without Borders after giving away their prize money.
Speaking at the NCE Graduate Awards ceremony at Civils 2006 last Wednesday, EWB founder and Buro Happold graduate Tom Newby said the charity had reached a plateau and would fail to expand further unless it could generate funds to cover staffing costs.Newby was addressing a room of 200 construction industry leaders including directors from many of the Awards' 16 sponsors.Within half an hour of speaking he received pledges totalling £11,000. Newby is hoping to raise £40,000.Awards winner Zeena Farook and runner-up Robin Campbell, both from Arup, joined highly-commended Newby to pledge a total of £1,000.EWB UK is a student-run charity which focuses on technical contributions to international development. It teams up with Non Governmental Orgnisations to provide facilities such as drinking water systems in developing nations. It also runs training courses for student and graduates.
