The New Doha International Airport (NDIA) Steering Committee has awarded a team including consultant WSP a masterplanning contract for the 10km2 expansion of the Hamad International airport (HIA) in Doha.
WSP has been providing engineering, security, and transport consultancy services in the development study. It will now provide masterplanning in a team led by architect OMA for airport expansion up to 2042, which will include the construction of a second passenger terminal and infrastructure for the 2022 Fifa World Cup.
“This is an extremely exciting project for WSP and one which showcases our global aviation and master planning skills, now enhanced by our Genivar merger,” said WSP project director Graeme Power-Hosking.
“On opening HIA will welcome up to 30M passengers into Doha each year and, with the Fifa 2022 World Cup putting the city on the world-stage, our aim alongside our client – the NDIA Steering Committee – is to make it a world-class airport with world-class infrastructure.”
The first phase of the masterplan is due to align with the start of the world cup in 2022.
