Saudi Arabia’s Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) has announced the winning metro contractors for the mega £15bn Riyadh Public Transport Project (RPTP).
The RPTP is the longest public transport system project currently in development worldwide.
Three international consortiums make up the winners of the design and build contracts for the six-line, automated metro project. They are:
- Italian firm Ansaldo STS leading the Arriyadh New Mobility group, which will be responsible for one line with a total distance of 40.7km. The contract is valued at US$5.2bn (£3.4bn).
- US firm Bechtel leads the BACS consortium, which has two lines with a total distance of 63.3km. The contract is valued at £6.1bn.
- Spanish firm FCC Construccion heads up the FAST consortium, which will deliver three lines that cover a total distance of 72.5km. The contract is valued at £5bn.
Work will begin immediately on the design of the metro project with construction set to start in the first quarter of 2014.
The system is expected to transform Riyadh in attracting investment, supporting business and making the city more efficient as it continues to grow. Riyadh’s population of 5.7M is expected to increase to 8.3M by 2030.
Along the 176km long, six-line metro network there will be 85 stations. Trains will be driverless.
The winning designs for the main stations from architects Gerber Architekten, Omrania & Associates, Snøhetta and Zaha Hadid, were revealed last month.
FCC’s FAST consortium will build lines 4, 5 and 6. Its main consortium partners are Korean firm Samsung and French firm Alstom. The other members are Dutch firm Strukton, Freyssinet Saudi Arabia, Spain’s Typsa and France’s Setec.
The consortium says it intends to use three tunnel boring machines to build 26.6km of 10m diameter tunnels. Building the entire route will require 600,000t of steel and 4.3M.m3 of concrete, and will employ over 30,000 workers.
