Tunnel boring machines power through the Pyrenees

Connection of power lines between France and Spain is now underway following completion of a twin bore tunnel through the Pyrenees.

The new connection will add to the existing four power lines and help to ensure power supply between the two networks and help overcome the fluctuations in power that result from the use of renewable energy.

Main contracting joint venture Eiffage and Dragados used two Herrenknecht double shield tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to complete the 8.2km of tunnels through hard rock. Work on the scheme achieved tunnelling rates of up to 53.5m per day with over a 1km of tunnels built each month.
