Second fatal Italian quake in days worsens damage to structures

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake yesterday struck northern Italy, the second to hit the Emilia Romagna region in just over a week.

This quake originated at a depth of 9km in the same region as the magnitude 6.0 event on 20 May, which killed seven people in the region and damaged several buildings.

Reports indicate that at least 16 people were killed in yesterday’s earthquake, and that many buildings, previously damaged by the 20 May event, have either collapsed or suffered further damage.
