PHOTOS | Work starts on Egypt’s giant ‘ski park’

Construction is underway on Cairo’s new “ski park” in the Mall of Egypt, which is scheduled to open in 2016.

The development will cover 162,500m², with shops, cinemas, and restaurants, in addition to the ski park.

British firm RMD Kwikform is providing temporary works for the project.

A key challenge is casting the sloping slab and pyramidal piers for the ski park. RMD Kwikform engineers are using a galvanised modular steel shoring system to give the exact slope support required for the 110m by 45.5m slab.

Formwork beams are being used for the pile caps, shear and retaining walls, with staircase towers providing access around the site.

UAE outfit Majid Al Futtaim, which built a ski park in Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates, is the developer behind the scheme.

The contractor is a joint venture between Belgian conglomerate Besix Group and Egypt’s Orascom Construction. The construction contract is valued at £237M.
