Contractors from across north-west mainland Europe have been selected for the £6.2bn Fehmarnbelt road and rail tunnel between Germany and Denmark.
Project promoter Femern named preferred bidders for three major packages on the 18km crossing.
Femern Link Contractors scooped both the immersed tunnel and portals and ramps packages. The consortium consists of French firms Vinci Construction Grands Projets and Soletanche Bachy; Denmark’s Per Aarsleff; Wayss and Freytag Ingenieurbau and Max Bögl Stiftung & Co, both from Germany; CFE from Belgium; Dutch companies Bam Infra and Bam International; with Belgium’s Dredging International as subcontractor and Denmark-based Cowi as consultant.
The tunnel contract includes construction of the 18km immersed tunnel tube, which consists of 89 pre-cast concrete elements.
The ramps and portals package includes construction of road and rail connections between existing networks and the new tunnel.
The preferred bidder for the dredging and reclamation work, which involves dredging of an 18km long trench in the seabed of Fehmarnbelt, is Fehmarn Belt Contractors, a four-way joint venture of Boskalis International with Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors from the Netherlands; and Germany’s Hochtief Solutions and Ed Züblin; with Danich firm Sweco providing consultancy services.
Femern expects to confirm the contracts by mid-May, although work on site is awaiting a German construction permit.
Nine consortia tendered for the work, and the preferred bidders were selected 50% on price and 50% on their technical solutions.
New Civil Engineer reported two years ago that lack of British interest in the main contracts for the Fehmarnbelt tunnel scheme had “disappointed” the project promoter.
