Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau, the German tunnelling arm of Bam, has won the contract to build a 2km double track tunnel in the centre of Frankfurt.

The construction will take place in the new Gateway Gardens district for rail infrastructure body DB Netz. The area is a new development near the airport with offices, hotels, retail, leisure and conference facilities. The tunnel, which will be 6m wide and 11m high, should be completed in 2019.

In order to create the tunnel, around 900,000sqm of land will be moved and 180,000sqm of concrete used.

Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau is also currently working on the construction of the 440m Europagarten Tunnel in Frankfurt, which will be completed in August 2016.
