A Jacobs JV has won a £703M contract to upgrade the Bruce Highway in Queensland, Australia, which includes constructing the country’s first diverging diamond interchange (DDI).
More common in the US, a DDI diverts traffic exiting major roads by temporarily moving it onto an overpass or underpass that runs on the other side of the road. It aims to improve safety by eliminating turns against oncoming traffic. A recent study concluded DDIs can cut the frequency of accidents by half.
Jacobs is a member of the Fulton Hogan Seymour Whyte Joint Venture (FHSW JV), which will to provide design services for the works on the highway between Caloundra Road to the Sunshine Motorway. The DDI is planned for Caloundra Road.
The FHSW JV consists of Fulton Hogan, Seymour Whyte Group and designers Jacobs and Arup. The client the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.
The job entails upgrading the highway to six lanes and upgrading major interchanges.

Detailed design has started and major construction is expected to begin in mid-2017. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2020.
