Aurecon to work on Dubai’s supertall tower

Australian engineering consultant Aurecon has been appointed by architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava to work on a new supertall Dubai skyscraper.

Known as ”The Tower”, the new structure at Dubai Creek Harbour is being led by Santiago Calatrava. It is thought that it will be comparable in height to the 828m Burj Khalifa. In addition, Aurecon has been appointed as the engineer/architect-of-record to collaborate with it on a range of design and technical features for the ambitious project.

“The Calatrava team were looking to work directly with our experts who have had hands-on project experience on other supertall and similar mega projects,” said Aurecon project director for The Tower Adrian Jones.

“The Tower will test the craftsmanship of Aurecon as we play our part in making a mark on the built fabric of mankind.”

The supertall building’s design includes a distinctive net of steel cable stays attached to a central reinforced concrete column. At the top of the tower is an oval-shaped “bud” that will house 10 observation decks, including the pinnacle room, which will offer 360º views of the city and beyond.

Aurecon said design work for the scheme was already underway and that timing was one of the biggest challenges. It said the ambitious project would have to be completed in approximately four years, so creating an efficient design and construction schedule would be vital.

“One of the secrets with courageous projects is not to use new techniques or materials, but to stick with what you know,” explained Aurecon tall buildings leader and the project’s design director Andy Davids. “At the same time, we must work to maximise the potential of those materials and techniques.

“What’s different in The Tower is that we’ll be pushing the use of these techniques beyond current norms to create something unparalleled, and for us that’s very exciting.”

Calatrava said that it had designed the structure with a strong focus on energy efficiency and sustainability. It includes a highly-efficient cooling system to mitigate the region’s hot climate. Water collected from this system will also clean the structure’s facade. Landscaping and vegetation on and around the tower would encourage solar protection and an integrated shading system and wing doors will also contribute to its energy efficiency, said Calatrava.

The Tower is scheduled to open in mid-2020 to celebrate the start of Expo 2020 in Dubai.
