Here we celebrate the projects from around the world which have been shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival’s structures and transport awards, to be presented next month.
The 2009 World Architecture Festival awards will take place on 6 November in Barcelona, bringing together and showcasing the work of designers from all over the world.
Shortlisted architects and engineers will present their projects to a panel of judges and the lucky few will receive their highly sought after awards at a glittering awards presentation ceremony.
Here is a rundown of the shortlisted projects in the structural design and transport categories.
Structural Design Category
Standing tall and spanning far, the entries in the structural design category came from countries as diverse as Canada, Japan and Indonesia as well as the UK. Bamboo features strongly this year, and was the material of choice for three of the seven shortlisted projects.

18m All-Glass Walkway, 150 Cheapside, London, United Kingdom (pictured)
A 1.5m wide and 18m long glass walkway at a prestigious new office building in the City of London. Glass floor panels are supported on a grillage of glass beams which in turn are suspended by means of solid stainless steel rods.

Bamboo Wings, Vinh Phuc, Vietnam
A bamboo culture centre with the roof constructed in the shape of bird wings.

Heart of School, Abiansemal, Badung, Indonesia (pictured)
An artisan thatched school that can seat 400 to 500 people. One of the world’s largest bamboo buildings.

Richmond Olympic Oval, Richmond, Canada (pictured)
The venue that will host the longtrack speed skating events during the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010. The one-of-a-kind 2.6ha roof structure features hollow, triangular-shaped composite wood-steel arches, which span 95m and conceal mechanical ducts, electrical conduits and sprinkler pipes. Spanning between the arches are novel, prefabricated “wood wave” panels.

wNw Bar, Binh Duong, Vietnam
Designed and made from low cost materials, wNw Bar is a structural bamboo arch system 10m in height, spanning 15m in length.

Mode-Gauken Spiral Towers, Nakamura-ku, Nagoya-shi, Japan
Three towers intertwined, which house the computer and animation, fashion and medical schools at Mode-Guakin.

Covering airports to underground stations from all over the world, this category features the crème de la crème of modern infrastructure.

Bridge in Shanghai, Qingpu, China (pictured)
This bridge over water, which incorporates references to Chinese tradition and the physical condition of the surroundings, spans 50m in length.

Spencer Dock Bridge, Ireland
This 40m span bridge across Ireland’s Royal Canal will take trams, traffic and pedestrians. The proportions of the bridge are unusual and provided an opportunity to consider the structure as a piece of landscape design.

Suspended Float-Cycle Bridge, Amstetten, Austria (pictured)
This cycle and pedestrian bridge, over the River Yibbs in the city of Amstetten, spans more than 80m in length and is constructed from steel frames and cables.

Bras Basah Mass Rapid Transit, Singapore (pictured)
Bras Basah MRT station is an underground train station in the heart of the historic Civic District, designed to be sympathetic to the surroundings.

Beijing South Station, Beijing, China (pictured)
Beijing South Station is a fully integrated multimodal transportation hub that serves as a gateway to the city. It is a vital link in China’s new high speed intercity network. The station creates a generous contribution to the public realm while enhancing the civic character of the area.

M. Main Station Stuttgart, Germany
A minimalistic concrete shell construction to renovate Stuttgart’s existing main railway station and develop it as a through station below ground level, to aid the development of the high speed railway network.

Sea Passenger Terminal (with Khalid Molato), Tangier, Morocco
Tangier Med is a passenger harbour to accommodate increasing levels of traffic and containing equipment and amenities for all types of passengers and shipping.

Thinking Beyond the Station: Aguasaclientes City Surburban Train, Aguasclientes, Mexico (pictured)
