Events - NCE Charity Golf Masters

CONSTRUCTION GOLFERS basked in early autumn sunshine at the NCE Charity Golf Masters competition last week and raised over £12,000 for charity RedR along the way.

Twenty teams from across the construction industry battled over the 18 glorious holes of Leatherhead Golf Club in near perfect weather conditions. By the end of the day the top teams were separated by only a handful of shots.

Top honours were taken by the team from Bristol-based law-firm Burges Salmon, led by partner Will Gard and accompanied by Ross Fairley, Nick Guppy and David Etherington.

In second place was Wilson James team led by Tony Palombo and narrowly behind in third place was the Roger Bullivant team led by Keith Nation.

Teams competed using a stableford format with best two scores counting on each hole.

The winners walked away with new golf bags, champagne, winners' caps and the NCE Charity Golf Masters trophy.

Some outstanding individual performances were seen including the massive 327 yard drive by Shon Williams of Stats to clinch the longest drive competition.

An eagle on the par 5 first hole secured Gary Stephens of Parsons Brinckerhoff a bottle of champagne and an umbrella, while Sandy Burrell of Scott Wilson also notched a par four eagle two to claim a bottle of champagne.

Funds were boosted by a raffle and auction during the awards dinner, during which a Wilson James donated day racing Zap-Cat racing boats pulled in over £500.

Guest speaker Alan Crane, former chairman of M4I, Bovis international, Travers Morgan and part-time BBC golf spotter, then entertained the audience with a short stroll through the mysteries of televised golf.

The event, now in its fourth year, drew record attendance and easily topped the previous record £10,000 raised last year.
