Why old west?

Having read yet another article on the west coast railway upgrade (NCE last week), am I alone in wondering about the point of it. It's safer but does it do anything better?

Can you access it from the M25, M42, M6, or M56- Where are the stations where I can dump my car and catch the train- The country has again squandered the opportunity to integrate key road and rail links.

We didn't do it when the motorways were originally built and we haven't done it now. These are all old routes going from city centre to city centre when most have since the arrival of the motorways moved to take advantage of road links.

As a profession we should be extremely embarrassed that we have allowed so much money to be spent for so little gain. The west coast upgrade really has no clothes.
