Privatising London's Tube and giving every Londoner shares in the new company has been proposed by the thinktank Selsdon Group. The group has said that the Tube should be divided into four private companies with every voting Londoner entitled to shares.

Shoppers in Ireland are to be forced to pay 9p for every plastic bag they take home from this week in a bid to cut down on the country's growing litter problem. The 'plastax' levy is an attempt to change consumer behaviour and stop Irish shoppers from taking 1.2bn free plastic bags home each year.

Alfred McAlpine paid £85M this week to buy Stiell, a facilities management business. The deal is part of its plan to turn itself into an infrastructure service.
