An 11km column of ash spewed out by a volcanic eruption beneath Iceland's biggest glacier forced airlines to divert flights last week. At least 10 transatlantic flights have been rerouted and many more cancelled. A change in wind direction could disrupt up to 50 flights a day.

Spain is making solar panels compulsory in all new and renovated buildings. The Spanish government said using solar energy could save households at least £50 a year and reduce carbon emissions.

Critics claim installation of solar panels will increase construction costs by between £765 and £1,000 per building.
