John Prescott has given the go-ahead for 3,600 homes and businesses to be built on greenbelt land around Stevenage, Hertfordshire.

This is in direct conflict with greenbelt policy but will help to solve the housing shortage in the area.

Fresh from predicting the coldest winter for a decade, the Met Office has forecast a drought and hosepipe bans to follow. It warned that the predicted dry winter will not replenish the reservoirs depleted by a dry summer and autumn.
