Contractor Mowlem has been suspended from a £25M renewals contract on the West Coast Main Line after botched work went unnoticed for 12 hours.

Faults on the busy stretch of 100mph track near Watford included misaligned sections of rail, missing clamps, loose bolts, twisted sleepers and misaligned track. The section was shut for three hours for emergency repairs.
