What the papers say - THE GUARDIAN

News stand

Britain came 16th out of the 22 European countries in the 2005 Environmental Sustainability Index. The Index covers pollution levels, policy and vulnerability to environmental damage. Britain was 66th out of 146 countries on the overall list, up from 91 in 2002. The UK's weakest areas were land degradation and air pollution according to the report's coauthor and director of the Yale centre for environmental law and policy, Daniel Esty.

Spain and Morocco have held talks on the construction of a 38.6km tunnel between the two countries. Running from the Punta Paloma to a point just east of Tangier, the tunnel will take advantage of shallower waters to the west of the Strait of Gibraltar.

The design will follow the Channel Tunnel model with two tunnels running 50m apart and a smaller tunnel running between them. £7M of preliminary drilling work is already under way but no timetable or budget has been established.
