US mayors have defi ed president George Bush to join a scheme to make US cities comply with the Kyoto target of cutting CO 2 emissions by 7% by 2010. The cross party response represents 29.3M people across the country.

A series of collisions between planes and buildings has sparked demands for a comprehensive review of ground safety at Heathrow airport. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch criticised the airport's failure to reduce accidents caused by parking planes hitting piers, gates and tugs. It says the airport is working to capacity and 'is constantly being driven to increase this still further'.
