What the papers say - The Guardian

News stand

Teams of water police are patrolling the French countryside to enforce restrictions prohibiting the irrigation of fields. France is facing its worst water shortage since 1976 and farmers fear crops will be ruined unless they flout the ban in force in 50 of the country's 95 departements. Fines of up to £940 can be levied if farmers are caught. Weather forecasters predict a hotter than usual summer, which could further worsen the drought.
