Statistics from water regulator Ofwat have shown that every day 36bn litres of water seep from leaking pipes before reaching domestic taps, enough to fill 500,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Plans have been drawn up for airport style security scanners and armed police at train stations. A trial scheme at London Paddington is expected to be announced by ministers later this month.
