US and Russian scientists have claimed that they have carried out controlled nuclear fusion with simple apparatus on a laboratory bench.

The claims are being investigated - but if true will have enormous implications for energy research.

The rebuilding of Afghanistan will be a 'test case for the West' to prove that its foreign policy is about more than security and defence, the World Health Organisation has said. The country should be rebuilt by countries such as the US to show they care about the public good, and not abandoned after the military campaign draws to a close.
