NEWS STAND

A scorecard that measures the railway's reliability, safety and age of trains will be published every three months, in a government initiative announced this week.

Finland's prime minister, Paavo Lipponen, this week argued that the EU should preserve the nuclear power option or become a 'fossil monster' reliant on increasingly expensive Russian gas.

German utility group, RWE, last week made a £2.3bn approach for Britain's largest electricity supplier, Innogy.

The nationalised German railway, Deutsche Bahn, will be approached by Railtrack Group to run the 43 mile stretch of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link from the mouth of the tunnel to Fawkam in Kent.
