Contractor Carillion revealed last week that equity stakes it holds in Private Finance Initiative contracts such as the GCHQ communications centre at Cheltenham and the M6 toll road have almost tripled in value.

Contractor Amec said its stakes in rail and hospital schemes had almost doubled last year.

The Construction Products Association and the National Health Service Confederation have appealed to the Treasury to simplify the bidding process for PFI contracts to build hospitals.
