UK-listed renewable energy company Solar Integrated Technology hopes to make £30M over the next two years by fitting solar panels to schools in California. The company makes standard roofing materials that generate energy from sunlight, so it targets companies that are renewing their roofs rather than environmentally-aware businesses. Fourteen San Diego schools are already signed up.

Paris is to unveil spectacular plans to convert the ChampsElysées into a huge athletics field. The announcement will be made on 5 June, the same date that International Olympic Committee inspectors publish their assessment of each city's bid.

Retreating glaciers in the Antarctic are a clear sign of climate change, according to a survey by the British Antarctic Survey and US Geological Survey. But the scientists do not confirm whether human activity is responsible. The report says rises in sea levels are threatened by the increasingly rapid descent of inland glaciers into the ocean.
