The short piece reporting the results of Babtie's study for the DTLR (NCE 13 December 2001) is in danger of perpetuating the myth that a 20mph (32km/h) zone is a home zone. The findings of that report clearly indicate that for home zones to make a real difference to the way residents use their streets, the speed of traffic needs to be reduced to nearer walking pace.
Anyone interested in finding out what makes a successful home zone should see the new book Home Zones: A planning and design handbook available from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation at www. jrf. org. uk An understanding of such new ways of treating roads in built up areas can be part of the reappraisal of what engineers and their institutions should be about, as suggested in Tim Dishman's letter. It is an interesting point to consider that for 1km of Jubilee Line, you could get about 2000 safer routes to school and/or 20mph zone schemes.
