What is to be done?

Serbia's shopping list is extensive and far from complete. A clear picture of reconstruction and investment requirements is emerging, though.

Projects suitable for private investment, important for Serbia's long-term economic growth, employment and stability.

Constanza-Belgrade-Trieste oil pipeline supplying 33Mt/year.

Belgrade-Bar-Bari natural gas pipeline connecting the Central Europe and Africa/Italy gas networks.

Erzurum-Ankara-IstanbulEdrine-Plovdiv-Sofia-NisBelgrade-Hungary pipeline, transporting natural gas from Turkmenistan, the Gulf, Iran and Russia.

Skopje-Sarajevo-Adriatic coast natural gas pipeline.

Baltic-Mediterranean railway link (Belgrade-Bar) - the shortest route between the two seas, out of operation due to war damage and neglect. Some re-routing needed.

Completion of the Belgrade ringroad.

Development of tolled highway system radiating from Belgrade.

Construction of a 100km oil/oil products pipeline between Pancevo and Prahovo to reduce shipping movements on the lower Danube.

Reconstruction of Pancevo refinery.

Upgrading of port facilities serving Danube-Rhine-Main shipping. Development of facilities for river-sea shipping, in particular at Belgrade and Prahovo ports. Belgrade has a theoretical capacity of 4.6Mt/year.

Extension and management of Bar port, currently able to handle 4Mt/year mixed cargo. The port was damaged by an earthquake in the mid 1980s.

Development of coal terminal at Kostolac 5Mt/year capacity.

Construction of new Danube rail crossing - existing bridge in poor condition.

Development of Belgrade rail system - figure of eight configuration needed to link the airport, bus terminal, international rail terminal and Belgrade's business and residential districts.

Development of Belgrade airport - Belgrade is aiming to win back 80% of the traffic lost to Bucharest in the last decade.

Transport planning, Belgrade - development of river transport, a mass rapid transport or metro system between Old Belgrade and New Belgrade, and regional bus transport.

Upgrading and management of Belgrade clean water supply and sewer systems.

Construction of at least 1,000 new apartments in Belgrade.

Development of office space in Belgrade.
