Whacky races

Letters

It was very interesting to read the article 'Straight to Sweden' (NCE 5 July). In July I set out on an even longer journey following the same route as far as Malmo but continued on to an American car show in Vesterass, 80km west of Stockholm.

I used my classic 1957 Chevrolette - you guessed it, that is a lot of petrol! The trip was 4150km, used 560l of petrol, and cost £400 - the price of petrol being considerably cheaper everywhere in Europe, Germany being the cheapest at 60p/litre and Sweden the most expensive at about 72p/litre.

Amazingly the car averaged over 19mpg, which is very pleasing for a 5.7ltr V8 engine car.
