Water special: projects compendium 2009

NCE’s water projects compendium is a snapshot of two water projects that have been ongoing in the past year: Huddersfield Waste Water Treatment Works and Barrow town centre’s improvements programme.

Barrow DG5

United Utilities undertook a programme of improvements in Barrow town centre to reduce the number of properties on the cellar flooding risk register.

The most significant element involved the construction of 29.5m diameter and 29.5m deep storage tank capable of holding more than 10M l of storm flows and associated tunnelling under the town centre. A 500m length of sewer was constructed 12m below one of the busiest main roads in the town using a Lovat boring machine to drive a 2.1m diameter tunnel connecting the existing sewer with the new tank.

It was possible to site the main sites away from the public highway to minimise impact on roads and transport. Throughout the project, excellent relations were maintained with neighbouring businesses.

Research into the history of the area indicated that the bulk of the bombing that occurred during World War II was away from the construction sites, however the possibility of discovering unexploded bombs could not be ruled out. Fortunately, none were found.

Huddersfield Waste Water Treatment Works

Improvements to Yorkshire Water’s existing works were required to ensure compliance with more onerous effluent discharge consent standards imposed under the Freshwater Fish Directive.

This project impacts on the most complex waste water treatment works in Yorkshire. Two large catchments (Huddersfield and Brighouse) are served by treatment works spread over six sites. Around 30% of the flow and load comprises trade effluent from the local chemical and textile industries. A new, tighter consent comes into force in March 2010 which will impose a more stringent ammonia standard.

Grontmij provided detailed design services to Morgan Est for a design and construct contract of a new activated sludge plant as part of a strategic relationship on the AMP4 Large Scheme Framework for Yorkshire Water.
