This graceful cable stayed footbridge is due to open at Maidstone this week. Its curved deck is made of interlocking strips of aluminium stressed together to form a wide plank. No secondary structural elements or finishes are needed because the aluminium strips fulfill all the functional requirements of the deck, including providing a non-slip surface. It was designed by consultant Flint & Neill Partnership and architect Chris Wilkinson and built by Christiani and Nielson. Client is Maidstone Borough Council.
