Beirut Port Authority is bidding to re-establish Jieh port as a connecting hub between east and west. A US$48M upgrading of infrastructure began in 1998, being carried out in three phases by a joint venture of Phil/Hojgaard/Hourie.
Capacity of the port's deepest quay, No16, is being increased and the quay wall filled with massive concrete blocks, each weighing around 100t. The 600m long quay will be equipped with mobile cranes which will unload the largest container ships directly onto a 200,000m 3storage area.
Behind the quay a Volvo L180C wheeled loader, one of four Volvo loaders supplied to the contract by local dealer J&G Abdelmassih, is moving fill material.
Phase two will see construction of a protective breakwater using 2Mt of rock sourced from local quarries. At one of these, Sibline, a second Volvo L180C fitted with a 4.4m 3spade nose bucket is loading rock into trucks bound for the port.
There, two Volvo LC330Cs load the stone into barges which transport it to the breakwater site. These 48t class machines have already clocked up more than 4,000 hours in service.
To increase depth in Quay 16 to 15.5m, some 90,000m 3of rock will be blasted from the basin.
