VolkerFitzpatrick wins £17M Stratford university contract

VolkerFitzpatrick has won a £17M design and build contract for University Square Stratford, a sustainable ‘university hub’ building in Stratford, east London.

University Square Stratford will be an multi-use academic building with 8,600m2 of floor space, to be used by Birkbeck, University of London and the University of East London (UEL). Works are due to start this month and the building is anticipated to be open by September 2013.

The structure is a five storey reinforced concrete frame incorporating a mixture of specification finishes including finished timber surfaces, glazing, granite and glass facades, rain screen cladding and exposed concrete ceilings. These contribute to the building’s heating and cooling strategy. The building has been designed to achieve an Outstanding BREEAM rating. Other sustainable features include photovoltaic façade panels and 700m2 of green roof areas.

Gardiner and Theobald LLP will project manage the scheme, and Make Architects designed the project. The London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LGTDC) has provided “substantial” financial support and guidance on the project to the two universities.
