VolkerFitzpatrick secures £8.9M contract for London library

VolkerFitzpatrick has won an £8.9M contract to design and build a library for the University of East London at its Stratford campus.

The 3,850m2 building will be spread over three floors and constructed out of air faced reinforced concrete. The external facade will comprise brickwork with aluminium glazing.

It will have a Breeam rating of excellence and include sustainable features such as photo voltaic panels, green roof areas, and rainwater harvesting for WC flushing. Efficient insulation, cooling and heating should produce low energy consumption and C02 emissions.

Exposed concrete soffits will allow the material’s thermal mass to naturally aid regulation of internal temperatures.

Features will include a domed skylight at roof level creating an atrium and focal point plus providing natural light for the inside of the library as well as a first floor internal bamboo garden.

VolkerFitzpatrick said the working campus and nearby school and residential areas will provide it with logistical challenges, particularly with demolition work.
