Vinci and Bouygues to build Cairo metro extension

Egyptian authorities have awarded the €264M (£191M) contract to build the Cairo metro extension to Vinci and Bouygues.

The team has already been working on the metro system in a joint venture led by Vinci Construction Grands Projets alongside Bouygues Travaux Publics, a Bouygues Construction subsidiary, and their Egyptian partners, Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors.

The next phase of civil engineering for Line 3 of the public transport system is between Haroun and El Nozha stations, going east to west through the capital. The design and build deadline is just 34 months.

The team will convert an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine used on the previous phase, to operate as a slurry machine.

Work on the next phase consists of 5.15 km of tunnel and five underground stations. It will create around 3,200 jobs, mostly for locals.
