This supplement, in partnership with New Civil Engineer, will give you an insight into the building and design of Britain's largest construction project, Terminal 5.
My focus is on three key objectives at BAA: to manage our 10-year, £8 billion capital investment programme efficiently and imaginatively; to secure permission to grow for the future; and to respond to rising customer expectations by developing a great airport experience.
On completion, T5 will deliver a step change in quality of service at Heathrow. The terminal will be state-of-the-art and BAA is also investing in the other four terminals, to ensure that they are of a similarly high standard.
We are on target to open T5 in spring 2008 and I hope that just four years later, we will be proudly welcoming the Olympic Games through its doors.
Heathrow is vital to the UK economy. T5 alone will provide 16,500 jobs but, more importantly, it will allow Heathrow to remain the jewel in the crown of UK aviation. Heathrow's attraction as a vital international hub helps to attract international business to the UK, with more global industry headquarters in London than any other European city.
We also have to deliver T5 in the right way. This means building safely so our 'One in a Million' campaign is designed to drive down site injury rates. And it means minimising the impact on our neighbours - we are meeting nearly 300 conditions as part of the development, with initiatives such as our logistics centre which has cut road deliveries significantly.
Looking beyond T5, the government's policy is for a third runway at Heathrow to be built after a new runway at Stansted, but only when we can meet the new EU air quality standards. Among our initiatives to manage air quality, are a trial NOX emissions related component to the airport charge and we are working with the UK government and the EU Commission, to integrate aviation into an EU-wide emissions trading scheme, from 2008.
In order to grow the aviation industry in the future, we have to pioneer ways to minimise environmental impacts, give our customers - both the airlines and passengers - a quality service and provide the UK with airports for the 21st century.
