Viaduct viable


RECONSTRUCTION OF Chicago's 75 year old Wacker Drive viaduct is being carried out with the help of Lusas Bridge analysis software.

Consultant Alfred Benesch & Company is using the software to design a 550m length of the second reconstruction phase of the viaduct. Nine separate sections with expansion joints between each require modelling in LUSAS.

With decks of slab and rib construction, post tensioning in two directions, irregular column supports and spans, and many vehicle loadings, the viaduct required detailed and careful modelling.

Using the Vehicle Load Optimisation facility in Lusas, vehicle and other live loading patterns are determined from influence analyses performed for selected critical locations, and live load design moment envelopes are then generated.
