Van Elle develops easy-to-use, low-cost pile auger cleaner

VAN ELLE PILING has developed and patented a simple low-cost, lowmaintenance pile auger cleaner in response to the Health & Safety Executive's intention to enforce regulations controlling the removal of spoil from auger drills.

The cleaner uses two sprung circular plates that engage with the flights of the auger and prise any lodged soil from between the flights. It is attached to a bracket which hydraulically engages the cleaner with the auger.

As cleaning is only required when the auger is removed, the device is withdrawn during the pile boring process.

Van Elle has tested the cleaner on a wide range ofsoils and has found it most effective in heavy clays in which the problem is greatest.

Van Elle says the cleaner is the least expensive and least complicated but 'most effective'available solution to the auger cleaning issue.

The company said it intentionally developed a system that was simple to make, fit, use and maintain because these were important factors in ensuring good safety procedures were adhered to on site.
