Christmas has come early for escalators at Oxford Circus tube station.

They are now in full service for the festive shopping frenzy, thanks to record-breaking refurbishment work by tube contractor Metronet. The company has fully refurbished escalator Number 9 in 16 weeks, 10 weeks faster than usual. It was vital that Metronet hit this deadline - Oxford Circus is the hub of the Bakerloo, Central and Victoria lines, which are used by 202,000 people every weekday. In order to accelerate the work programme, Metronet used more people on site, reduced the number of concurrent projects, subcontracted specific tasks and improved materials management. It now plans to complete all future escalator refurbishments within 16 weeks.
