Under construction bridge collapses in Germany

German bridge collapse

An under construction bridge has partially collapsed in the German city of Schweinfurt, causing a fatality and leaving others seriously injured.

The 40m-long section of the Schraudenbach bridge collapsed yesterday afternoon (15 June), with scadffolding plummeting around 20m onto the A7 highway.

At the time of the incident, 20 workers were on site. While at least one person is understood to have been killed, another six workers were seriously injured.

Emergency services have been dispatched to the site to search for any others who may have been trapped by debris.

While the cause of the fatal incident is not yet known, Schweinfurt police have launched an investigation.

In a statement, Bavaria transport minister Joachim Herrmann expressed condolences to the relatives of those affected by the accident, and insisted that the subsequent investigation would focus on careful clarification of the cause.
