Tsunami warnings as magnitude 8.3 earthquake hits Chile

Five people have died and one million people have been evacuated, according to the government of Chile.

The National Emergency Office of the Ministry of Interior and Public Security evacuated the entire national coastline after the tsunami warning. The National Seismological Center said the epicentre 42km west of Canela Baja and 11.1km deep. Tsunami warnings in some areas have now been lifted.

The Government of Chile’s official Twitter feed showed this photo of officials updating the media on the situation.

The US National Weather Service says Tsunami Advisories are in place for Southern California, Hawaii and American Samoa. However minor flooding and strong currents are expected, but it does not expect a major destructive tsunami.
