Between the two tunnelled sections of West Rail lies Tsuen Wan West station, now just over 43% complete. Wedged in between a busy road and the sea, much of the station site is located on 6ha of land reclaimed by China Harbour Costain joint venture under an HK$257M advance works contract.
The reclamation work involved removing 264,000m 3of dredged material, importing 691,000m 3of fill and building an 800m long sea wall. The operation was complicated by the need to extend and realign sewage outfalls so they could discharge beyond the reclaimed area. Two pumping stations and a ferry pier also had to be replaced, all within a tight 19 month contract which ended on time and to budget in October 2000. This was the first civil construction contract to be completed on West Rail.
Tsuen Wan West station itself, a HK$1.8bn underground structure designed by WS Atkins for KCRC, is now under construction within a propped diaphragm wall box. Penta Ocean-Kier joint venture started work on this in October 1999 while reclamation work was still under way. Work on the diaphragm walling is 77% complete despite foundations subcontractor Bachy Soletanche having to excavate through a buried sea wall.
Penta Ocean-Kier is getting into the swing on the cut and cover tunnel sections which which will link the station to the Tai Lam and Kwai Tsing tunnels.
North of the station, tunnel excavation work is 30% complete, while to the south, it has only just begun.
