A FORMER truck driver who only went to college to avoid being outshone by his wife has been named ICE East Anglia Outstanding Student of the Year.
Mature student Nigel Aves, 36, gained ten distinctions on his HND in civil engineering from Norwich City College, the highest grades ever achieved in the 25 years of the course. He now works as a site engineer for contractor Jackson Civil Engineering.
'This is a particularly impressive achievement and we hope others will be encouraged to persevere in the same way, ' said ICE East Anglia chairman Terry Oakes when making the award at the regional AGM last month.
'Nigel left school at 16 and began work driving plant machinery. Although this gave him valuable site experience, he was determined to improve his skills to enable him to pursue a professional career with a national civil engineering company, ' said Oakes.
For Aves, the impetus came from his wife: 'I always felt I could have done better at school, but it was my wife starting college who spurred me into action. Both she and my college tutor fully supported me, ' he said.
Jackson is now sponsoring Aves on to Incorporated Engineer status through a vocational course at Anglia Polytechnic University.
