SOUTH WEST Water's £1bn Clean Sweep scheme aims to reverse a century of neglect in waste water management in the region.
Begun a decade ago, more than 40 projects have been completed, benefiting over 200,000 people, whose sewage was previously disposed of directly into the sea.
Miller Tunnelling (now Morgan Tunnelling) was awarded the £63M project to build the first sewage treatment plant for the Torbay area. A Dosco Roadheader TBM took six months to build a 460m long, 4.25m diameter tunnel through Devonshire Limestone to connect with an outflow tunnel.
Colcrete Eurodrill supplied the automatic tunnel grouting system for the TBM, a similar system used by Miller on the Humbercare sewerage tunnel in Hull. The system synchronises the injection of accelerator with the grout and can employ either isobaric or isovolumetric grout injection.
