Transport tools

Lawrie Haynes used the transport forum to launch a new 'tool kit' of ideas aimed at solving congestion and integrating the trunk road and motorway network with other transport modes.

Among the 'tools' are new junction layouts to maximise traffic flows, priority vehicle lanes and multi-modal travel information systems. The new junctions, which range from the 'displaced right turn' to the 'double- through-about' and 'sign- about', are claimed to reduce delays with little extra land take and no reduction in junction capacity.

Other ideas which will be piloted throughout the country, include:

Ramp metering and access control to motorways.

Rail freight interchanges.

Route management strategies for trunk road and motorway network.

Motorway bus lanes.

Education and publicity campaigns to encourage use of other transport modes.
