Trading blows

In recent times there has been much debate regarding the status of civil engineers and steps that might be taken to improve the situation.

So it was with disbelief that I read that Clare Curtis-Thomas, Labour MP for Crosby, is a 'civil engineer by trade' (NCE 24/31 July).

If NCE classifies civil engineers as tradespersons rather than professionals, I see very little hope of enhancing our status either in the short, medium or even long term.
