Tipner remediation project completed

Construction work on 80 new and affordable homes in Portsmouth can now get underway following completion of an almost year-long remediation project at the site.

Funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), which owns the site at Tipner, enabled the former tar and chemical works to be cleaned up ready for redevelopment.

Main contractor Tamdown Group worked with consultants Merebrook and Campbell Reith to undertake extensive bioremediation and soil washing to treat contaminated soil on site and prevent off-site disposal. The remediation work took 46 weeks to complete during which time the solution had to be revised to include soil stabilisation techniques due to discovery that there was a higher clay content in the actual ground conditions compared to those suggested by the site investigation.
