Many civil engineers feel their career development is not taken as seriously as it would be in other sectors, and blame lack of training for their disaffection.
Roger Bullivant Roger Bullivant is chairman and founder of substructure and modular building specialist Roger Bullivant. He describes himself as 'a believer in the application of lateral thought to problem solving' who spends much of his time challenging the status quo.
Bullivant's company has recently gone through a major restructuring, and Bullivant says he needs 'the best thinkers and doers' around him. He holds strong views on training and development and does not believe the construction industry takes these matters seriously enough.
Rowan Sharples Rowan Sharples describes himself as a 'mobile Lancastrian' who has been under continuous training and development with Tarmac and Carillion since graduating in 1974.
In 2001 he was appointed managing director of Carillion Infrastructure Services - a £400M business whose projects include London Underground, Sellafield, the West Coast maintenance and modernisation projects and the M25, M1, M62, and M6.
Sharples has responsibility for training the company's 1,500 16 to 19 year olds, recruiting and training graduates and placing temporary staff through the firm's people solutions business, SkyBlue.
Peter Lobban Peter Lobban joined CITB as Chief Executive in April 1998, and has been a member of the board of the Movement for Innovation (M4I) since its inception.
He started his career at the London Business School, and moved into human resources when he joined the Confederation of British Industry. From 1986 to 1998 Lobban held directorships within Shell both in the UK and overseas. He was also chairman of the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation and was very involved in offshore construction and safety issues in the North Sea.
Bob Devonshire Bob Devonshire began his career with George Wimpey, working his way up over a period of 13 years from trainee to senior training officer. This was followed by three years in Sri Lanka working as a training consultant for the World Bank. He returned to the UK and worked for the PSA looking after civils and building structures on American airforce bases throughout East Anglia and as senior training advisor for Tarmac before joining the CITB as principal training adviser.
For the last 12 years Devonshire has been the recruitment and training manager for Edmund Nuttall.
Richard Haryott Richard Haryott, a Fellow of both the ICE and the IStructE, is a director of Arup with particular responsibility for promoting quality of product and process. He is also chairman of The Ove Arup Foundation, a charitable trust aimed at promoting education and knowledge within the built environment. Haryott is the immediate past chairman of the Joint Board of Moderators - the body that accredits undergraduate engineering courses for the ICE, IStructE and CIBSE - and has wide experience of the links between industry and academia.
Currently he is a vice president of the ICE, with a responsibility for professional development.
