This cut is the deepest

A JOINT venture of UK foundation contractors Cementation Foundations Skanska and Bachy Soletanche will this month begin work on London's deepest ventilation shaft as part of Section 2 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.

The £3. 6M, 54m deep shaft, in Hackney, east London, will comprise a 1. 2m thick diaphragm wall excavated by grab crane down to 12m, then by reverse circulation hydromill to depth.

Because the restricted site lies next to a live railway, it has demanded 'intense detailed planning' before work begins in mid-September to ensure it proceeds safely and to programme.

The shaft, which is due to be finished by Christmas, is on CTRL Contract 220 which involves construction of 7. 5km of twin tunnels connecting Stratford International Station with St Pancras.
