The extent of development in Dubai is breathtaking.
There are now three Palm Islands under construction. The largest, Palm Deira, will have 8,000 villas. Its central 'trunk' is 10km long, and its 80km 2 land area is being created from 1bnm 3 of dredged sand and rock. A group of mini-islands called the World is also rising from the waves.
Dwarfing them all, phase one of Dubai Waterfront alone will create an 81km 2 land mass, and homes for 400,000 people. Nine consecutive phases will follow, including excavation of a 70km canal inland, around southern Dubai.
There are also plans to extend Dubai Port with a series of offshore container ship berths.
Including the island developments, in the next 15 years 700,000 new homes and 200 to 300 new hotels are to be built, and 'millions and millions of square feet of retail'.
